Stars & Las Vegas

The boom in high-rise condo projects in this city´s canyon of casinos known as the Strip has spawned its own new status symbol : the celebrity resident.

About 8,000 condominium units are under construction or about to start, according to SalesTraq, a Las Vegas real estate information company. It´s a building explosion fueled in part by speculators in the torrid real estate market here and the desire of buyers from California and Asia to own a piece of Sin City´s action.

Counting cards in blackjack

William Poundstone is a prodigious researcher of the odd but interesting.

His previous books include "Big Secrets" and "Bigger Secrets," in which Poundstone delves into Colonel Sanders' super-secret herbs and spices that make KFC an international brand and whether Walt Disney's cryogenically preserved body is really in a hidden room of Snow White's castle.

"Fortune's Formula," however, is a much more ambitious undertaking, a sweeping historical account of underpaid Massachusetts Institute of Technology whiz kids turning probability and information theory into a cash machine. It's populated by mean-street gangsters, Wall Street hustlers, Rudolph Giuliani, Michael Milken and two ego-mad Nobel Prize-winning economists whose hubris precipitated the biggest hedge-fund bailout in history.

Monte Carlo Casino

I don't even play the lottery, but as a James Bond fan, I simply had to follow his lead and test my luck in the famed Casino de Monte-Carlo, giving myself a strict limit of $20 (about 16 euros).

The first and most famous casino was built here into a hillside in the 1870s by the deliberately disarmingly named Societe des Bains de Mer. (Bathing in the sea is healthy, after all.)

The society also added the magnificent Opera House (www.opera.mc) adjacent to the casino, an effort to mitigate the stain of gambling. Even today, Monaco locals are not allowed to gamble in their own country.

Gaming

'This event is for everybody who want to have a great time,' says Michael Taylor, President of the Expo. 'We are combining the best of all worlds - poker, gambling, beer, competition and some surprising entertainment.'A couple of guys from Riverside got together and decided to launch the biggest consumer show for gamblers on the West Coast, December 2-4, 2005.They wanted to celebrate the lifestyle, the action, and gaming as an increasingly popular form of entertainment for Americans.

Katrina cripples Gulf gambling industry

Hurricane Katrina picked up several Gulf Coast casinos and hurled them hundreds of yards inland, crippling the region's gambling industry for months and potentially even years.

At least three of the floating barge casinos in hard-hit Biloxi were tossed from their moorings by the storm's 25-foot wall of water, their barnacle-covered hulls coming to rest up to 200 yards from the shore.

At the Grand Casino, the walkway visitors once took from the lobby to the poker rooms and blackjack tables was now an open hole into the bay. All the windows were blown out. The mast of a sunken sailboat stuck up from where the barge once was. Gary Loveman, chairman of Harrah's Entertainment Inc., the world's largest gambling company, told CNBC the casino was "probably ruined."

Harrah's North Kansas City Casino

The Missouri Gaming Commission is investigating a blackjack player's complaint that his casino comps were canceled after pit bosses at Harrah's North Kansas City Casino and Hotel suspected him of counting cards.

If the allegation is upheld it would be a first in Missouri, said commission enforcement chief Steve Johnson.

Casinos in the past often have lost or miscalculated players' points for free meals and other goodies. "They tend to settle those to the advantage of the player," said Johnson. He said this is the first time in his memory a casino has been accused of using player points as a weapon in its arsenal against card counters.
